History

Intent

Great Yarmouth is a diverse community which is influenced by historical factors that have shaped the area and beyond. Our history curriculum aims to:

  • develop a sense of belonging by understanding the origins of the diverse cultures within our community, the British Isles and the wider world. Broaden horizons to be able to access and experience the world beyond the immediate locality.
  • develop confidence in communicating; question, understand, evaluate and express how the past has influenced the present locally and worldwide, using appropriate historical vocabulary.
  • develop a resilient attitude, learning from the past to make a positive contribution to the future.

Implementation

History is taught discretely in KS1 and KS2, and is returned to every term so that skills are developed and prior learning is built upon. History units are enquiry-based and allow students to examine artefacts and develop historical skills of analysing, interpreting and hypothesising in order to better understand the past.

Opportunities have been made to emphasise local links and significant figures during specific historical periods, understanding that children are able to better understand what they have learnt if they can personalise their learning.

Historical facts and key events or figures are recorded on timelines evident in every KS1 and KS2 classroom; these key dates are referred back to in every classroom so that learning is consolidated.

The curriculum encourages a range of trips so that learning inside the classroom is consolidated through physical experiences.

Impact

Through the delivery of our History curriculum, our students:

  • build their understanding of the chronology of British history year on year
  • are curious and excited to discover about historical events that have shaped the world they live in
  • reflect on the past, making connections and comparisons between then and now
  • examine evidence and ask questions to understand better how we learn about the past, including analysing the ways that perspectives of periods of history has changed over time
  • develop a deep, subject-specific vocabulary range that informs and enhance their historical discussions
